About Michael
Michael brings warmth, curiosity, and a deep sense of compassion to his work, fostering therapeutic relationships that are grounded in trust and mutual respect. He integrates creativity and humour into his sessions when appropriate, recognizing the healing power of playfulness and authenticity in navigating complex emotions. With a trauma-informed lens, Michael supports individuals in building emotional resilience and self-awareness, helping them reclaim their narratives and move toward meaningful change. Whether he’s guiding someone through a crisis or celebrating small victories, Michael’s approach is always collaborative, intentional, and deeply affirming of each person’s unique journey.
Michael is a graduate of Dalhousie University’s Master of Social Work program and has been registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers since 2009. He has over 16 years’ experience working with adults, children, youth and supporting families and 8 years’ experience working with men who have been charged with an intimate partner violence related offense.
Michael uses a mindfulness-based approach in tandem with a variety of evidence-based modalities including cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, narrative therapy, applied suicide intervention, brief solution-focused therapy, and single session counselling.
Michael’s philosophy to practice is strongly rooted in anti-oppressive practices. He believes in the creation of a safe, inclusive environment that honors individuals’ lived experiences ensuring they feel empowered, valued, and supported. He maintains an unwavering commitment to person-centered, social justice informed counselling and prioritizes authentic connections and a person’s right to self-determination, agency, and autonomy.
Michael collaborates with individuals who are exploring their neurodiversity and gender & sexuality. He also works with those experiencing intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, emotional distress and dysregulation, substance misuse and abuse, compounding stress, and general mental wellness and well-being related concerns.
Michael has an unquenchable fascination with arachnids and carnivorous plants. He is a geek at heart and appreciates anything related to science fiction, horror, Lego and video games. You can often find him spending time with his hedgehog, Colonel Custard or learning about the strange and odd facets of nature.
