Hi, my name is Shannon Heppner (she/they). I am a counselling intern with Island Clinical Counselling in the Nanaimo locations. I will be taking on clients and offering counselling in the community starting in January. My approach is holistic, warm, trauma informed, strength and resilience focused, an affirming and safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodiversity-affirming, with a lens focused on understanding thoughts, emotions and behaviours to create meaningful shifts in affecting change.
I also have a background of 20+ years in frontline work as a responder and rescue specialist. This first-hand work and education gave me a deep understanding of the trauma and resilience effects frontline workers face and how or when it is time to reach out. You are not alone.
When I am not working, I am a continuously learning through education and connection. I love connecting with my family and friends, hiking and exploring in all weather, kayaking, boating and fishing, walking my dog and or meditating.
I originally come from Powell River. In this nature robust small coastal community, I spent most of my time working and playing in the bush or on the water. Eventually started my career as a rescue specialist for the Canadian Coast Guard which brought me to Vancouver Island. I got my Community Mental Health Worker Certificate and had the opportunity to work along side people who lived with barriers to housing, mental health, substance use and brain injury. Working alongside these folks drew on my curiosity of how can I do more to support people and the barriers that sometimes come with being human. I went to Vancouver Island University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care. From there I was able to work along side teens and children in the schools as well as their families in community and nature. I am currently completing my Masters in Counselling through City University of Seattle.
