Labour support singleton 37+ / Multiples 34+ Labour support in a hospital with a doula means having a trained professional by your side during the entirety of your labour and delivery experience (this may start off with labouring at home prior to heading in to the hospital)—offering continuous physical, emotional, and informational support throughout the entire experience, and advocating for YOU the entire time. In a hospital setting, where medical staff may change shifts and care can be more clinical, I will stay with you the entire time, acting as a steady, grounded and safe presence. Here’s what that CAN typically look like: Physical Support I will help you cope with labour using comfort techniques like: Breathing techniques and reminders to stay relaxed Massage, counterpressure, or hip squeezes (especially helpful in back labor) Position changes to support labor progression and comfort Use of tools like birth balls, peanut balls, rebozos, hot/cold packs, tens, birthing comb, cupping, acupressure & more Helping you stay mobile (walking, squatting, and moving around) IF allowed Create a calming environment with low lights, music, essential oils and relax your mind which aids in a relaxed body. Emotional Support Encouragement and reassurance throughout labour Help managing fear, anxiety, or panic Grounding techniques during intense moments Support for your partner or support person, helping them feel confident and involved Providing a sense of calm continuity, even during shifts or medical procedures Informational Support Explaining medical procedures or terminology in plain language- big terms you may not understand in such a fast paced setting can be overwhelming Helping you understand your options are if interventions are suggested Encouraging you to ask questions or request time to decide Supporting your birth preferences while staying flexible Acting as a bridge between you and hospital staff (but not speaking for you) Advocacy Support Helping you communicate your wishes clearly and respectfully - we will always show up with a very clear birth plan- handed to all healthcare professionals so we are all on the same page Supporting your right to informed consent and refusal Encouraging you to ask: “What are the benefits and risks?” “Are there alternatives?” “What happens if we wait?” “Can we have a moment to discuss this privately?” After delivery, I will stay for your initial golden hour, your first skin to skin contact, your initial feed and I will make sure you're settled and supported before I leave. This may look different if it is a planned or emergency c section!
