In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the initial assessment is a comprehensive diagnostic process that aims to evaluate a patient’s overall health by identifying patterns of imbalance. Unlike Western medicine, which often focuses on isolated symptoms, TCM emphasizes a holistic approach, considering physical, emotional, and environmental factors.
The assessment typically involves four key diagnostic methods:
Inquiry (问诊, Wèn Zhěn) – Gathering detailed information about symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, and emotional state.
Observation (望诊, Wàng Zhěn) – Examining the patient’s complexion, tongue (color, coating, shape), and overall vitality.
Auscultation & Olfaction (闻诊, Wén Zhěn) – Listening to the voice, breathing, and detecting body odors.
Palpation (切诊, Qiè Zhěn) – Assessing the pulse (quality, rhythm) and checking for tenderness or stiffness in meridians.
Through these methods, the TCM practitioner identifies underlying disharmonies (e.g., Yin-Yang imbalance, Qi/Blood stagnation) and formulates a personalized treatment plan, which may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, or Qi Gong. The initial assessment ensures treatments address the root cause, not just symptoms, promoting long-term wellness.
