FERTILITY/PRECONCEPTION Initially when couples decide to try and conceive, they sometimes find that it may take longer than had been planned. Reflexology has been shown to help this process naturally and successfully. Women have reported that using reflexology at this stage, whether through natural family planning or using assisted reproductive technologies like IUI or IVF, this natural therapy helped them to prepare emotionally and physically; and was a key component to conceiving naturally. Reflexology is beneficial for both partners helping to relax and become more balanced during what could be an emotional and stressful time. PREGNANCY During pregnancy, reflexology has been shown to be helpful at reducing some of the symptoms mothers-to-be experience. It helps to; promote relaxation, improve circulation, reduce stress and relieve common discomforts. It helps to improve; hormones, mood, sleep, tension and address issues like swelling or nausea. This natural therapy gently nudges the body towards improved functioning of all its systems. It is a natural alternative therapy using specialized zone pressure to activate different zones on the foot corresponding to reflex points to different organs, tissues and parts of the body. Prenatal reflexology includes specialized reflex stimulation to the reproductive organs, lymphatic system, pelvic area, digestive system, lumbar spine, thyroid, pituitary gland, solar plexus and adrenal glands. PLEASE NOTE: Reflexology is NOT recommended during the first trimester when the risk of miscarriage is highest. ENCOURAGING NATURAL LABOUR Reflexology is also commonly used to help induce natural labour. For mother's looking to avoid medical interventions, this is a very supportive natural therapy to include as part of the labour plans towards the last couple of weeks of pregnancy or past due date. FOURTH TRIMESTER POSTPARTUM SUPPORT Reflexology can support the natural healing processes of the body and mind. It can promote hormonal balance, help with depression and improve quality of sleep. It has been shown to help breastfeeding mums in improving milk production and helping the menstrual cycle return to normal in the months after birth. Prenatal Foot Reflexology is offered by Marilia Pereira, Certified Reflexologist and active member with the Ontario College of Reflexology.
