The second session in a Gottman style couples counselling series is an individual session with the counsellor, without your partner present. This gives each of you space to build your own therapeutic relationships with the counsellor so you can feel secure that they understand you and will be your advocate during the course of your work together. This session also allows for learning about how your individual past affects you today, and how it's affecting your relationship.

The first session in couples counselling using the Gottman Method starts with an assessment, in a joint session between the couple and the counsellor. Together you form a thorough picture of your relationship and the issues you're facing, that can be used to decide on the therapeutic interventions that will be most useful.

The third session in couples counselling using the Gottman Method is another joint session, where the counsellor will go over their assessment of your relationship's strengths and weaknesses, and give you a treatment plan with measurable steps that you can refer back to as you learn and implement your new tools and behaviors.
