From a neuroscience perspective, a chiropractic adjustment—specifically a High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude (HVLA) thrust—is a rapid, controlled stimulation of the neuromusculoskeletal system that acts as a therapeutic input to the nervous system. Rather than just mechanical "bone-shifting," the adjustment aims to reduce dyskinesia (abnormal joint movement), dysafferentation (abnormal sensory input), and improve sensorimotor integration (the brain's ability to interpret sensory input and create appropriate motor output). Research shows that spinal manipulation can activate the prefrontal cortex, allowing for improved modulation of pain, better motor control, and changes in how the brain handles emotional stress, can help regulate the Autonomic Nervous System, shifting the body away from sympathetic (fight or flight) dominance and toward parasympathetic (rest and digest) activity, and can lead to long-term neuroplastic changes—the brain's ability to rewire, reorganize, and adapt its neural connections.
