Dr. Joanna McGowan, DC
My mother asked me “are you SURE?!” I had just told her that I was declining two medical school acceptances to enter chiropractic college.
I first saw a chiropractor for a knee injury when I did competitive gymnastics. I knew I wanted to work in the healthcare field, and I was good at using my hands to find people’s “tight spots.” Becoming a chiropractor has allowed me to work in the realms of health rather than sickness, and I’ve been able to put my sports background to good use.

My Chiropractic Journey
My undergraduate years at McMaster were interspersed with exchanges to other countries, as the travel bug is bred into me (Australian father and English mother). Four years and four languages later, I entered the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. These were some of my happiest years in school — it’s amazing how quickly time passes when you really love what you’re learning. I graduated with honours in May 1993, and took over the long-time practice of Dr. Terrence Hanrahan later that year.
Goals
My goal, and I think you’ll find we’ve achieved it, is to have an interactive office that makes you feel comfortable and is conducive to healing. I’ve tried and researched a lot of different therapies, and am quick to suggest alternatives that may help my patients and their families with a variety of health challenges.
My Family
My family has always been very active. Soccer, rugby, tennis, beach volleyball, curling, cross country and downhill skiing are sports that we’ve participated in over the seasons. We enjoy the outdoors, especially being around water. One of my favourite things is to watch the herons fishing at dawn, having a new bird come to the birdfeeder, and walking my dog in Victoria Park.
It’s easy to put your health on the bottom of the “To-Do” list sometimes. That’s why I have a standing appointment to get adjusted each week right after my Rotary meeting. I workout twice a week, and try to get some outdoor exercise like walking or skiing as well. I sometimes get the comment “working with the public, you must get sick a lot.” I can’t remember the last time I was sick. If you listen to your body, and know what to do to support it, it will work amazingly well!
I consider myself an excellent listener, and I hope I get the opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss your specific health challenge. Contact our office today to get started!
