Dr. Plug completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Calgary in 2002 before spending several years working in optometry practices throughout Calgary. Somewhere between helping patients find the perfect pair of glasses and discovering how much she loved caring for people, she realized she had found her calling. That journey led her to Pacific University College of Optometry, where she graduated with honours in 2012. Pacific University College of Optometry is well known for it's vision therapy, binocular vision and euro-optometry curriculum.
After graduation, Dr. Plug made Nanaimo home, falling in love with the city within minutes of visiting Piper’s Lagoon. Over the past 14 years, she has built lasting relationships with patients while practicing at Oceanside Optometry, formerly Eye Care Nanaimo. Many of her long-time patients will recognize her friendly face as she begins this exciting new chapter with Opto-mization.
Dr. Plug believes exceptional eye care is about far more than helping people see 20/20. It’s about understanding how vision influences comfort, reading, learning, balance, confidence, and everyday life. She enjoys caring for patients of all ages and abilities, whether it’s helping a child choose their very first pair of glasses or helping adults discover why reading has become more difficult than it used to be. She jokes that it’s a little less funny now that her own arms seem to be getting “too short” to read menus.
After seeing firsthand how the right visual treatment transformed her own mother’s quality of life, Dr. Plug became passionate about understanding the deeper role vision plays in overall health and function. She has completed advanced training in the Opto-mization Method, expanding her expertise in visual function, binocular vision, and neuro-optometric care. Alongside comprehensive eye exams and primary eye care, she now helps patients experiencing dizziness, concussion symptoms, headaches, visual fatigue, reading difficulties, and other conditions that may be connected to how the eyes and brain work together.
When she’s away from the clinic, you’ll usually find her spending time with her husband and two daughters, exploring beautiful Nanaimo, cooking together as a family, or relaxing with a good book.
