About Jan
I am a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist with The Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology and a Registered Canadian Art-Therapist with the Canadian Art-Therapy Association.
Completing my undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of South Africa (UNISA), I then took a 2 year post-graduate program in Art-Therapy at the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute (KATI) in British Columbia. Following this, I completed my Masters in counselling psychology at Yorkville University in Fredericton.
Since 2016, I have worked in community services, a hospital, counselling centres, private clinics, schools, and an assisted living facility. This was in urban and rural settings, including first-nations communities in the NWT, BC, AB and NS.
Therapy can support you through your struggle to find relief and well-being. I am comfortable offering therapy for many different concerns or ailments. However, I am well versed with Grief/Loss, Trauma and PTSD, Depression, Anxiety and Panic, Parenting/Family, Child, Relationship issues, Abuse, Self-esteem, Personality concerns, Anger, Conflicts, Cultural adjustment, Financial issues, Health issues, Loneliness, Motivation, Perfectionism, Procrastination, Self-harm, Sexual assault, Shyness, Sleep issues, Stress, Suicide, and Adjustment related matters.
In therapy, I work with you to discover and transform the deep, unresolved matters that have caused you trouble through a humanistic, phenomenological, creative process of self-discovery and redefinition. In this, I integrate Narrative, ACT, Mindfulness-based, Somatic, CBT, Gestalt, Psychodynamic, and Strength-based approaches. In therapy, I understand that it is very important to be supportive, empathic, and compassionate, while also recognising that growth sometimes requires being challenged and addressing difficult topics. I believe in sharing humanity, but also in the application of science - I aspire to be a well rounded practitioner. I do not profess to have all the answers, but I do believe we can discover the way. It is an honour to accompany clients into the core of their wounds. As we journey to find missing parts, grieve what is lost, mend what is broken, and find unencumbered, clear ways to weave a vibrant, joyous, and whole self.
I also facilitate assessments for ADHD, Trauma / PTSD, Autism, Learning disorders, Dyslexia, IQ, Academic concerns, Giftedness, and Psycho-social or general psychological related matters - for both children and adults. I put an exceptional amount of work into my assessments and take great care to be detail-oriented, thorough, and accurate. Assessment can help you clarify, understand, and find the right support for what is troubling you - and can be incredibly illuminating.
I’m glad to be of service and welcome you to get in touch.
