About Sola
Hello, and welcome. I'm Sola (she/her), a practicum student completing my Master of Counselling degree.
I came to Canada from South Korea in 2014. Being a first-generation immigrant has shaped how I understand identity, belonging, and the quiet work of building a life in a place that was vastly different from where I grew up. Canada has been a blessing in my life, allowing me to reinvent and rediscover who I actually am.
I believe the most important work we do is building a healthy relationship with ourselves, with all of our parts. So much of what we struggle with is not a flaw to be fixed, but a part of us that learned to protect us in the only way it knew how. In our work together, my hope is that you can come to know those parts with more curiosity and less judgment.
I also believe in having structure and systems that actually work for you, rather than fitting yourself into a rigid, prescribed structure that society has decided "works." If you have ever felt that you were failing at a way of living that never quite suited you, you are not alone. My hope is to help you find your own way of navigating life, in the way that feels most authentic to you.
I'm deeply interested in developmental and childhood trauma, and in the patterns we develop because of it. These patterns often made sense once. They kept us safe, or connected, or unnoticed when that was what we needed. Together we can look at the patterns that no longer serve you, and begin to work with them.
My approach is person-centred, and I draw primarily on Internal Family Systems (IFS), along with DBT and ACT. I also have training in Brainspotting. I don't currently offer Brainspotting as a practicum student, but if you are interested, we can talk about it together, and with Kate, my supervisor. More than any particular method, I care most about you feeling safe and genuinely heard.
Most of all, I aim to be a companion, someone with whom you can safely share parts of yourself and your journey.
I offer sessions in both Korean and English, and I currently provide low-cost counselling while completing my practicum under clinical supervision. If any of this resonates with you, I'd be glad to hear from you.
