60 min TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) and TMJD (temporal mandibular joint dysfunction) is essentially talking about the same thing with the difference being TMJ is the actual joint name and TMJD naming the dysfunction. TMJ treatment is treatment of the muscles surrounding the TMJ that are pulling or tightening so that the TMJ can not function properly. TMJD treatment is treatment to specifically address the dysfunctions that the joint may have. Such as popping, clicking, getting stuck on open and closing, can’t open or close fully. Some TMJD can not be treated manually, it is important that you are diagnosed by a doctor, oral surgeon, or dentist. They can xray the TMJ and see if there are any structural or anatomical issues that is causing your pain and discomfort. Not all jaw pain is a TMJD issue. It can be tight muscles from things like clenching, grinding, chewing on fingernails, stress, eating too hard of food or sticky food. These are factors that can be discussed with your therapist. What to expect in a treatment? The first appointment will be 1hr which will include assessment and treatment. Assessments are movements of the jaw, palpating the neck muscles, seeing how you bite. Treatment will be external work on the neck, clavicle, jaw, face and head, then intraoral by pinpointing specific muscles like the masseter, lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid. Treatment can be a bit painful at first. We do our best to work within your pain threshold and never past your level of tolerance. You may experience a bit of swelling and soreness the day or two after which is normal but you should see results right away. Treatments are 3 to 5 sessions and re-evaluation depending on the severity of the case. Who can get tmj treatment? Anyone with jaw pain! Who should not get tmj treatment? If you have braces, have any dental issues like toothache, or currently getting dental treatment (ie only have the mock up done for a crown or implant). If you have oral or maxillofacial injuries that are in active treatment, whether trauma to the face, or cancer. Before you book Direct billing
