Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle manual therapy that optimizes the central nervous system (CNS) by releasing deep-seated tensions within the body’s connective tissues. This modality focuses on the craniosacral system—comprising the skull, sacrum, and the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that protect the brain and spinal cord. By enhancing the rhythmic flow of cerebrospinal fluid and relaxing the dura mater—the protective fascial membrane surrounding the CNS—CST helps shift the body from a "fight-or-flight" stress response into a restorative parasympathetic state. This process directly addresses the fascial system, a body-wide web of tissue that encases nerves and organs; when restricted by trauma or surgery, this fascia can compress neural pathways and trigger systemic pain. Through light-touch manipulation, CST melts these fascial adhesions and provides indirect support to the vagus nerve, allowing the nervous system to self-regulate and recover from conditions such as migraines, concussions, and chronic stress. It is widely used for neural recovery and whole-body integration, though it is contraindicated for those with active intracranial pressure, such as from a recent aneurysm or skull fracture.
