This appointment is dedicated to the breast cancer population who will be undergoing radiation
treatment the following day or as close as possible to the start or radiation treatment.
During this appointment, our physiotherapist will apply Mepitel film (MF) to the radiation field as
outlined by the tattoos applied during radiation planning. Education will be provided on how to best
maintain the integrity of the MF throughout radiation in order to significantly reduce the impact of
radiation dermatitis.
A home stretching program that will help minimize the impact of radiation induced fibrosis (RIF) will be introduced / reviewed. The goal of the program it to maintain functional shoulder mobility and
range of motion in order to minimize postural changes and pain that can be caused by RIF.
The goal is for the MF to last for the duration of radiation. Studies also recommend MF use for two weeks upon completing
radiation in order to support tissue health as it recovers from the treatment. Follow up radiation prep appointments can also include reassessment of shoulder mobility and exercise prescription as indicated.
Or it can also include lymphatic massage treatment if appointment time allows for it.
