During a pelvic floor assessment, a thorough medical history is completed. We ask A LOT of questions about your bowel, bladder and sexual health/function in order to understand your presenting concerns. We understand that pelvic floor concerns are typically sensitive and private. Please know that during your assessment your concerns are taken seriously and your information is kept confidential.
After a complete history, a pelvic floor exam is completed. This first involves an external pelvic floor exam and then commonly either a rectal or vaginal internal pelvic floor exam.
Once the exams are completed, we discuss the findings and begin treatment. Treatment of pelvic floor concerns often involves education and pelvic floor exercises. To help with exercises, we sometimes use biofeedback. Biofeedback involves placing sensors around the rectal area so that we can read on a computer how well your pelvic floor is contracting.
