Hot stone massage is a type of massage that uses smooth heated stones that the therapist places on your body, as well as in his or her hands to massage the body. Typically made of basalt (river stones), these stones are formed as lava cools following volcanic eruption, they are smoothed by the continuous movement of water over the stones. Basalt stones also have an inherent ability to retain heat allowing the warmth from the stones to decrease joint pain, improve circulation and reduce stress and anxiety.
