Dry needling is an evidence-informed therapeutic technique performed by a trained healthcare practitioner that involves the insertion of sterile, single-use filiform needles into myofascial trigger points, tight muscle bands, connective tissue, or other neuromusculoskeletal structures. The goal of treatment is to reduce pain, decrease muscle tension, improve circulation, restore normal muscle function, and enhance joint mobility and range of motion.
By targeting areas of muscular dysfunction and trigger points, dry needling can help interrupt pain patterns, promote relaxation of tight or overactive muscles, and stimulate the body's natural healing processes. The technique may produce a local twitch response, which is a normal physiological reaction associated with the release of muscle tension.
Dry needling is commonly used in the management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, including neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, headaches, sports injuries, tendon-related disorders, and movement dysfunctions. Treatment is often incorporated into a comprehensive rehabilitation program alongside therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, education, and functional movement training to optimize recovery and improve overall physical function.
