My name is Angelu Mae Galvez and I graduated from Evolve College of Massage Therapy. I have also graduated from University of Manitoba with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology and Recreation Management – Athletic Therapy. I was certified as an athletic therapist in 2021. As an athlete that suffered multiple injuries, I would like to use my knowledge in both Atheltic Therapy and Massage Therapy to help people who have been in a similar situation. I enjoy using Orthopedic assessment, therapeutic massage as well as incorporating relaxation techniques to help bring balance back to the body. I also recently certified in Evidence Informed Clinical Cupping!

This massage begins with a general/verbal assessment keeping the client’s lifestyle and complaint in mind. The main purpose is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. It helps shorten recovery times from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes. Swedish massage also stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them subtle and pliable and stimulates the skin and nervous system. It reduces both emotional and physical stress.

Therapeutic massage is a treatment based massage. There is an assessment of conditions, structures, misalignments, pains and aches to create (or re-create) a better environment for the body to live. With an osteopathic based approach all systems of the body are noted: circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, muscle, skeletal and nervous. All of these systems work together as one to help the body function, so if one system has an issue it may show related problems on another. Following the assessment, a traditional Swedish massage will be performed with advanced techniques that offer therapy to the dysfunctional area being addressed. The first appointment will require 60 minutes for full assessment.

During therapy cupping, a slight vacuum is created inside the “Baguanfa Cups”, which are then placed on the skin to provide a gentle suction. The suction effect softens the tissue and increase the flow of qi, blood and fluids. By stimulating the skin and underlying muscles, it helps release toxins in the regions that have accumulated and promotes blood and lymphatic circulation. Cupping can be used on the neck, shoulders, back, sacrum, hips, abdomen, thighs, arms, calves, and even in some cases, the forehead or the feet. Receiving cupping is often characterized as either mildly uncomfortable or deeply warm and relaxing. People often report that the experience stays with them longer than most treatments and the change in the tissue is truly amazing! It releases rigid tissue and stubborn knots. Contracted, tense and painful muscle tissue will soften quickly with a few minutes of suction. When used in a series of treatments, the results are cumulative, yet even in a single treatment a long-term physical issues may be resolved. Applications for this technique include body contouring, addictions, chronic pain relief, pre-surgery preparation and post-surgery recovery (face and body), and more.

IASTM, or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization is a manual practice which utilizes clinical instruments to increase mobility of scar tissue and adhesions or “knots” into the myofascial system. By increasing mobility and reducing restrictions in the muscle and fascia, IASTM can promote healthy movement and healing of tissue. This modality can be utilized in several different dysfunctions, including tendonitises (for example: tennis elbow, runner’s knee, plantar fasciitis), post surgical scar treatments, or limited range of motion in joints. An IASTM treatment will include assessment of the tissue, application of the clinical instruments, and a re-assessment on how the tissue responds.

Follow up appointments are approximately 15 minutes which include about 5 minutes of tissue warm up and approximately 10 minutes of targeted Graston treatment. Best results occur with 1-3 treatments per week over a four-to-five week period depending on your condition. Results typically begin to show after 3-4 sessions depending on your condition. What to bring to a follow up? Low waist shorts and a open back shirt or sports bra (depending on area being treated).
Facial Cupping is a technique used to help brighten lustreless skin, reduce redness, tighten sagging areas, drain congested lymph, soften wrinkles and discourage the formation of new ones. The muscles of the face benefit greatly from reduced tension and tightness, easing expression lines and loosening the rigid muscles associated with TMJ disorders. The lifting and purging of the facial infrastructure effectively mimics the pumping action of manual lymphatic drainage. The action moisturizes the skin by increasing local circulation, also droopy eyelids are lifted and sagging double chins are minimized. Sinus infections and inflammation are also addressed by the loosening and draining effects of the suction - many times resolving issues that many sufferers commonly turned to more radical procedures to relieve. It works on the skin surface and deeper tissue without the possible effects of pigmentation, loss of scars, infection, rashes, or toxic buildup of chemicals. Go treat yourself, you deserve it!

TMJ stands for Temporomadibular joint. We find it in front of the ear and when it has dysfunctions it is not something to laugh about. This joint is used when we talk, eat and often when we are stressed by clenching our jaws. Typical symptoms include pain in jaw and ear area, clicking of the jaw, and in severe inability to open the jaw. Most clients also state that they clench or grind their teeth when sleeping. New leaf therapist start the by treating the smaller muscles that effect the neck and jaw that are often included in a neck massage and then continue on to focus on the 4 major muscles surrounding this joint. To get a better understanding of how the jaw is moving we often ask the client to open and close the mouth with are hands directly on the joint near the ears. This therapy requires the client to understand that some of these muscles are found inside the mouth and we will be treating those muscles with gloved hands. Great care will be taken to ensure your safety as well as the therapists. Something to also consider as a client; if the therapist believes that their TMJ therapy is working even just slightly, they will not overdo it because of the nature of this joint. So if you came in with a loud click when you open your jaw, our goal may just be to make that click quieter. Please come visit us for TMJ therapy regardless of how big or small the problem.

Graston Technique (GT) Therapy is an evidence-based form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that allows for precise detection and treatment of fascial restrictions as well as muscle and tendon dysfunction. GT Therapy providers can target and specifically treat affected tissues often resolving issues once thought to be permanent utilizing specifically designed instruments. Graston is great at treating many dissections such as: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Tendonitis Muscle/Tendon Strain Ligament Sprain Chronic Neck/Trap tension Thoracic Outlet Sydrom Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Epicondylitis Trigger Finger/Thumb DeQuervain’s Syndrome Your first visit is between 45 to 60 minutes. We will begin with a discussion to better understand your current health condition and discuss your treatment goals and expectations. This session will also involve an introduction to the Graston technique. Treating soft tissue injuries can be uncomfortable, however this procedure is not meant to be painful. While bruising and redness is not the intent of the treatment, you may experiences some redness and soreness in the tissue treated initially. Every effort will be made to ensure your comfort during the procedure while achieving maximum benefit from Graston.
