Running has given me many unique opportunities, from the sports fields in Hamilton growing up to the varsity track at Dartmouth College and the University of Guelph to races worldwide. It has helped me build self-confidence, explore my ambitions, surround myself with lifelong friends, and appreciate the gifts of movement, being outdoors and nature.
Among many wonderful experiences in the sport, I was lucky enough to compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in the 800m and other international events while representing Canada. After the Olympics, struggling with Achilles tendinopathy, I sought help from the Runner’s Academy.
The first session was groundbreaking, with a new perspective on the skill of running and how to take care of my body in the context of the sport. That experience gave me much more control in the injury process, a new understanding of a sport that I loved so much, and a vision for my path moving forward.
The joy that good health and pain free movement can bring is priceless. As competitive running was winding down, I transitioned into coaching, strength & conditioning, and Manual Osteopathy. I graduated from the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy and now practice as a licensed Osteopathic Manual Therapist.
Manual Osteopathy is built upon three basic principles. The first is that the body is a dynamic unit. No part of the body functions in isolation. OMT’s consider the complex relationship between tissues and structures during our assessment and treatment.
The second principle is that the body is self healing and regulating.
The third is that structure and function in the body are interrelated. Osteopathy is concerned with reducing restriction through manual treatment, with the intention of improving body motion mechanics as a whole. This in turn allows the body’s nervous and circulatory systems to function more effectively. When this occurs, the body’s capacity to self heal and regulate is also improved.
For athletes and active people, this process is essential to recovery, our ability to move more efficiently, and resilience to injury.
I’m thrilled to join the Runner’s Academy community in my hometown. I hope to learn and grow here as a practitioner and coach, while teaming up with runners and athletes of all levels to help them pursue big goals and gain a better understanding of their bodies.
