Hi, my name is Brian Der! My path to becoming a physiotherapist wasn’t exactly a direct one – it took a bit of time and a lot of discovery. I completed my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta and even worked as an engineer for six years before realizing that it wasn’t truly my passion. That realization brought me back to the University of Alberta to pursue a Master’s of Science in Physical Therapy.
Physiotherapy has been a natural fit. Sports have always been a big role in my life, as I grew up playing high-level basketball and volleyball, and played two years of volleyball at Grant MacEwan. Today, I can honestly say I love being a physiotherapist intern and being able to combine my love of movement, problem solving, and helping others.
I understand that everyone’s lives, goals, and interests are unique, and I tailor treatment plans to reflect that. Getting to know my patients is one of the most important parts of the process, allowing us to work together towards meaningful and personalized outcomes. I’m passionate about empowering patients through education, evidence-based treatments, and personalized rehabilitation strategies to help them return to the activities they love. During my clinical education, I gained valuable experience in orthopedic private practice as well as neurological rehabilitation, including vestibular conditions, traumatic brain injury, concussion, stroke, and spinal cord injury. I'd love to be a part of your rehabilitation team and help you achieve your goals!
Outside of the clinic, you can find me walking my dog, rock climbing, playing volleyball or basketball, skiing, watching sports, or spending time with my family and friends.

Our Lower Extremity VALD Assessment is designed to give you an in-depth, data-driven understanding of your lower body performance and strength. Using cutting-edge VALD technology, this assessment measures your force output, asymmetries, and muscle function across multiple ranges and movement patterns. Through a circuit of objective tests, including isometric strength, jump performance, and dynamic control, we identify how efficiently your lower body is performing, where imbalances may exist, and how to optimize your training or rehabilitation program. Whether you’re recovering from injury, enhancing athletic performance, or simply wanting to understand how your body moves, this assessment provides precise metrics and insights that can’t be seen by the naked eye.
Our Upper Extremity VALD Assessment delivers an advanced analysis of shoulder, arm, and grip performance, giving you measurable data on strength, endurance, and balance across both limbs. This session runs through a targeted circuit of tests to evaluate isometric strength, range-specific stability, and neuromuscular control across key joints and movement patterns. By capturing precise force-time data, we can pinpoint asymmetries, track recovery, and optimize your upper-body performance like never before. Whether you’re an overhead athlete, recovering from upper body injury, or simply want to perform at your best, this assessment transforms subjective feel into objective performance metrics, giving you a roadmap to move better, stronger, and smarter.
