Physiotherapist, IMS (Chan Gunn) Practitioner, Certified Fascial Manipulation Instructor

Cheryl aids individuals with musculoskeletal problems after traumatic injury, mobility issues, and chronic problems, associated with injury or strain. She is proud to say that UBC was where she began her training in physiotherapy in 1994. Her early career involved vocational rehabilitation, pain management and work hardening programs. Cheryl studied with the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapists and in 2006 she studied with the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain (iSTOP) becoming certified in Chan Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (CG IMS) which improved the treatment response to manual therapy.

En savoir plus sur CherylAfficher moins

Cheryl travelled to Italy in 2010 to study the deep fascia with Italian physiotherapist, Luigi Stecco, to better assess and treat musculoskeletal pain. In her experience, this approach called Fascial Manipulation®, has been an important way to evaluate and treat those individuals with problems not responding to conventional treatment. Fascial Manipulation® addresses the body as a system, which because of injuries or strain, can create compensations over time. Considering the body in this way, we can help to improve range of movement, strength and coordination. The above techniques are used for those disruptive spinal and peripheral disorders to improve movement, reduce pain and restore individuals to their previous functional activities. Currently, Cheryl is teaching Fascial Manipulation® in North America.

Another important focus of Cheryl’s is treating those individuals after undergoing a mastectomy or truncal/thoracic surgery. These patients require specialized treatment including lymphatic system care, scar release, regaining shoulder & spine movement and upper body to trunk strengthening.

In her life outside the clinic, Cheryl loves to garden and travel. Travel allows her to revel in new cultures. Another passion includes the challenge and intrigue of gastronomy typically involving wine. To stay active, Cheryl loves to hike in the mountains and beachside with her two faithful border collie companions. Her dogs have sparked an interest in canine rehabilitation.

Please Note: This service is NOT covered by Extended Benefits coverage and can't be submitted for Direct Billing. You must have an initial assessment prior to booking a subsequent treatment. Fascial Manipulation® is a soft tissue manual therapy method to treat chronic and subacute myofascial pain and dysfunctions by targeting the areas of altered gliding ability (densifications) in between fibrous layers of myofascial structures. Fascial Manipulation® involves applying deep friction on these areas of densifications to improve this gliding ability. The method can be painful, but improvement is typically seen within 2-3 sessions.

Facial Palsy results from damage to the facial nerve for a variety of reasons. It can cause the face to stop moving on one or more rarely both sides of the face. Sometimes the facial nerve recovers quite quickly (days to a few weeks) and at other times it might take longer (months). Typical diagnoses include: Bell’s palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, Acoustic neuromas/Vestibular schwannomas, trauma, congenital facial palsy, Lyme disease and others. Facial Neuromuscular Retraining will help you learn how to use your facial muscles again through soft tissue mobilization and specific retraining strategies to regain coordination and balance in your face. This treatment is especially useful if you develop synkinesis or abnormal movement patterns.

TELEHEALTH - TMD / JAW Assessment
TELEHEALTH - TMD / JAW Initial Assessment · 60 minNew patient

Facturé àICBCRégimes de soins de santé complémentaires

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) are a group of complex problems related to the jaw joint (the term TMJ is often used to refer to these types of problems). These conditions may be the result of a number of factors, including trauma (such as a car accident, a blow to the jaw, or a fall on the chin) and overuse (such as persistent clenching of the jaw). Treatment includes extensive education regarding the diagnosis, symptoms and self-care strategies to help with recovery. The initial examination involves taking a thorough history as well as examination of the temporomandibular joints and neck. The majority of individuals with TMD also suffer from neck pain, hence the importance of the neck examination. Treatment involves a strong emphasis on education. Following the initial examination, the client is provided with an anatomy lesson of the involved muscles and joints, the mechanics of jaw movements, and advice on methods to reduce strain to the jaw and neck. Other components of treatment may include self-manual therapy, self-massage techniques, soft tissue stretching and active exercise prescription.

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based therapy program used to treat problems associated with balance, vertigo and dizziness. Specifically, it works with the parts of the brain that process balance information. A vestibular assessment will involve filling out a questionnaire, discussing the history of your condition in detail, and a series of head positioning tests, vision tests and balance tests specific to your condition. Treatment may involve self-manual techniques along with balance, vision and coordination exercises. Please note that the assessment and treatment of vestibular problems may provoke some of your symptoms. For this reason it is recommended that you have someone with you in the room during your treatment.
