Dr. Joseph S. Oliva, B.Sc., DC, DACRB, FCCPOR(C) is one of Canada's most credentialled chiropractic rehabilitation specialists, with over 40 years of continuous clinical practice in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, occupational injury management, and functional recovery. He practices in Vaughan, Ontario, where he serves as Clinic Director of the Woodbridge Rehabilitation Centre — a multidisciplinary rehabilitation clinic providing coordinated care for patients with spine, joint, and musculoskeletal conditions.

En savoir plus sur JosephAfficher moins

Dr. Oliva graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) in 1986 and has remained in uninterrupted clinical practice since that year. Over four decades, he has developed specialized expertise in the rehabilitation of complex spinal and musculoskeletal disorders, post-surgical functional recovery, occupational injury rehabilitation, and the management of chronic and acute pain in adults of all ages.

He holds two advanced postgraduate credentials — the DACRB and the FCCPOR(C) — placing him among a small number of chiropractors in Canada who have pursued both fellowship- and diplomate-level training in rehabilitation. These credentials reflect not only advanced clinical knowledge but a demonstrated commitment to peer-reviewed standards in chiropractic rehabilitation practice.

Education and Professional Credentials

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) — University of Toronto

Dr. Oliva completed his undergraduate scientific education at the University of Toronto prior to entering chiropractic professional training. This foundational science degree underpins his evidence-informed approach to clinical assessment and patient management.

Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) — Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, 1986

Dr. Oliva earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC), the largest and most established chiropractic institution in Canada. Professional chiropractic education at CMCC encompasses anatomy, physiology, neurology, biomechanics, diagnostic imaging, and clinical management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders.

The World Health Organization recognizes chiropractic as a healthcare profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, with particular emphasis on spinal conditions.

DACRB — Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board (1997)

In 1997, Dr. Oliva earned the Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board (DACRB) — one of the most rigorous postgraduate credentials available to chiropractors in North America. The DACRB requires completion of an advanced residency-style curriculum, written and practical examinations, and peer assessment by the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board.

Candidates for the DACRB demonstrate mastery in:

• Functional rehabilitation and movement restoration

• Musculoskeletal assessment and outcomes measurement

• Occupational injury management and return-to-work programming

• Therapeutic exercise, rehabilitation programming, and functional capacity evaluation

The DACRB is held by a small number of chiropractors and represents a formal commitment to rehabilitation-focused clinical excellence that extends well beyond standard chiropractic licensure.

FCCPOR(C) — Fellow of the Canadian Chiropractic College of Physical and Occupational Rehabilitation

Dr. Oliva also holds the FCCPOR(C) designation — Fellow of the Canadian Chiropractic College of Physical and Occupational Rehabilitation. This Canadian fellowship reflects advanced postgraduate training, examination, and peer recognition in chiropractic physical and occupational rehabilitation.

Fellowship status in Canada's chiropractic rehabilitation specialty college represents one of the highest levels of credential attainment within the profession. Dr. Oliva is among the relatively few Canadian chiropractors who hold both a Canadian fellowship and an American diplomate in rehabilitation — a combination reflecting sustained, career-long commitment to clinical and academic standards in chiropractic rehabilitation.

Clinical Practice

Dr. Oliva's practice focuses on the conservative management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders across a wide range of presentations — from acute injuries to complex chronic pain conditions and post-surgical recovery. His approach emphasizes identifying and treating the underlying cause of dysfunction, not simply managing symptoms.

Conditions Commonly Treated

• Chronic and acute low back pain, including lumbar disc disorders and lumbar radiculopathy

• Neck pain and cervical spine disorders, including whiplash-associated disorders and cervicogenic headache

• Sciatica and lumbar nerve root compression

• Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

• Shoulder impingement and rotator cuff conditions

• Joint dysfunction and movement impairment

• Degenerative musculoskeletal conditions

• Occupational injuries and repetitive strain disorders

• Post-surgical rehabilitation following orthopedic procedures (hip, knee, shoulder)

• Mobility limitations and functional decline in older adults

• Mild traumatic brain injury with associated musculoskeletal sequelae

Treatment Techniques

• Spinal Manipulation — evidence-supported manual therapy for restoring joint mobility and reducing nerve irritation in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine

• Active Release Technique (ART) — a patented soft tissue method used to identify and release adhesions in muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves; particularly effective for nerve entrapments, repetitive strain injuries, and post-surgical soft tissue restriction

• Graston Technique — instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization for the treatment of chronic fascial and tendon conditions

• Dry Needling — intramuscular stimulation targeting myofascial trigger points to reduce muscular dysfunction and referred pain

• Rehabilitative Exercise Therapy — individualized, progressive exercise programs designed to restore strength, stability, and functional movement patterns

• Functional Capacity Assessment — clinical evaluation of a patient's physical capabilities, used in occupational injury and return-to-work planning

Clinical practice guidelines from the American College of Physicians recommend non-pharmacologic treatments — including spinal manipulation, exercise therapy, and rehabilitation programs — as first-line approaches for patients with acute, subacute, and chronic low back pain.

Occupational Injury and Workplace Rehabilitation

Dr. Oliva is a registered healthcare provider with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) of Ontario and has treated work-related musculoskeletal injuries throughout his 40-year clinical career. His dual credentials in chiropractic rehabilitation — the DACRB and FCCPOR(C) — are particularly relevant to occupational injury management, both requiring advanced training in workplace injury assessment and return-to-work programming.

Workplace conditions commonly managed include:

• Lifting and manual handling injuries

• Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and cumulative trauma disorders

• Occupational neck and back disorders

• Musculoskeletal injuries related to workplace ergonomics and prolonged postures

Treatment programs are designed to restore functional work capacity, reduce pain, and support timely and sustainable return-to-work outcomes in coordination with employers and WSIB case managers where applicable.

Motor Vehicle Accident Rehabilitation

Dr. Oliva provides assessment and treatment for patients injured in motor vehicle accidents and participates in Ontario's automobile insurance rehabilitation system. He is registered with Health Claims for Auto Insurance (HCAI), the electronic platform used by Ontario healthcare providers to manage treatment authorization and claims for motor vehicle accident patients.

Conditions commonly assessed and treated following motor vehicle accidents include:

• Whiplash-associated disorders (WAD Grades I–III)

• Cervical and lumbar spinal injuries

• Soft tissue trauma and myofascial injury

• Post-collision musculoskeletal dysfunction and movement restriction

• Mild traumatic brain injury with associated cervical and musculoskeletal involvement

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)

Throughout his career, Dr. Oliva has assessed and treated patients presenting with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) in the context of workplace incidents and motor vehicle accidents. His management approach addresses the musculoskeletal sequelae commonly associated with MTBI — particularly cervical spine dysfunction, headache, vestibular-related balance issues, and mobility limitations following head trauma.

These cases frequently involve coordinated care within the multidisciplinary environment at Woodbridge Rehabilitation Centre, in collaboration with physicians, neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, and other regulated health professionals.

Dry Needling and Acupuncture

Dr. Oliva has extensive training in both dry needling and traditional acupuncture. He previously held registration as a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac.) through the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO) and later resigned from that regulatory college.

He continues to incorporate dry needling within his chiropractic musculoskeletal practice — using intramuscular stimulation techniques for the treatment of myofascial trigger points, muscular inhibition, and pain modulation in appropriate clinical presentations. Dry needling within chiropractic practice is consistent with the scope of chiropractic care as regulated in Ontario.

Professional Association Memberships

Dr. Oliva maintains active membership in the following professional organizations:

• Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA)

• Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA)

• Canadian Chiropractic Protective Association (CCPA)

• Acupuncture Council of Ontario

• Associazione Italiana Chiropratici (AIC) — the national professional association representing chiropractors in Italy, reflecting Dr. Oliva's engagement with the international chiropractic community

Professional Leadership and Service

Over the course of his career, Dr. Oliva has contributed to chiropractic professional development through organizational leadership and examination roles within the rehabilitation specialty community.

Canadian Chiropractic Specialty College of Physical and Occupational Rehabilitation

• Secretary-Treasurer

• Board Examiner

Canadian Society of Chiropractic Evaluators

• Member

Alliance of Rehabilitation Centres of Ontario

• Secretary-Treasurer

These roles involved governance, professional education, and the examination of candidates seeking advanced credential status in chiropractic rehabilitation — contributing directly to the standards of the profession Dr. Oliva has practiced within for four decades.

Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation

At Woodbridge Rehabilitation Centre, Dr. Oliva practices within an integrated, multidisciplinary rehabilitation environment. The clinic coordinates care across multiple healthcare disciplines to address the full complexity of musculoskeletal recovery — recognizing that chronic pain, functional disability, and post-surgical rehabilitation frequently require more than any single discipline can provide.

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation has strong support in clinical literature. Research cited in the Canadian Medical Association Journal and guidelines from the World Health Organization identify coordinated, interdisciplinary approaches as among the most effective for patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions and complex rehabilitation needs.

Clinical Philosophy

Dr. Oliva's clinical philosophy is grounded in the conviction that lasting recovery is not passive — it is the product of commitment. A healthy body and mind are within every patient's reach, and it is the consistency of care, and the patient's active engagement in their own health, that determines long-term outcomes.

His approach to treatment prioritizes:

• Identifying and addressing root causes of dysfunction, not only symptom relief

• Restoring normal movement patterns and joint mobility

• Building functional strength and stability to prevent recurrence

• Supporting return to work, sport, and meaningful daily activity

• Empowering patients to take an active, long-term role in their musculoskeletal health

This philosophy has shaped more than four decades of clinical practice — and the long-term patient relationships that reflect it.

What to Expect During a SoftWave™ Mapping Session A mapping session is the first step in SoftWave™ therapy. It helps us find the exact areas in your body that need treatment. During the session, a handheld device is moved over the area where you have pain or limited movement. The device sends gentle sound waves into your tissue. • Healthy tissue usually feels like mild tapping or vibration. • Injured or inflamed tissue often feels more tender or sharp when the waves pass through. This response helps us “map” the spots that need the most attention. The session usually takes about 10–15 minutes. There are no needles, no anesthesia, and nothing invasive. Once the mapping is complete, we can begin treating the problem areas right away if appropriate.
