Hands-on treatment in physiotherapy refers to manual therapy techniques where the physiotherapist uses their hands to manipulate, mobilize, or massage the patient's muscles, joints, and soft tissues. These techniques aim to alleviate pain, improve mobility, enhance circulation, and promote healing. Common forms of hands-on treatment include: Joint mobilization/manipulation: Gentle movement of joints to restore range of motion and reduce stiffness. Soft tissue massage: Targeted pressure applied to muscles and soft tissues to relieve tension and improve blood flow. Myofascial release: Techniques to release tension in the fascia (connective tissue) that surrounds muscles and organs. Trigger point therapy: Pressure is applied to specific points of muscle tightness to reduce pain and relax muscles. Manual stretching: Helping the patient stretch their muscles or soft tissues to improve flexibility. Hands-on therapy is often used in combination with exercise, education, and other modalities to support rehabilitation and recovery.
A physiotherapy follow-up is a subsequent appointment or visit to a physical therapist after the initial evaluation.
The physiotherapist will do a physical assessment of your injury/problem area. During your initial assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss with you what they have found, they will provide treatment (often a combination of manual therapy techniques to relieve pain and restore mobility, and specific exercises that you can do at home to accelerate your progress), and they will come up with a treatment plan for you, including recommendations regarding scheduling further treatments with you.
