Jim moved to BC, establishing practices in the Okanagan, and subsequentially on Vancouver Island. He joined the staff of Edgewood Health Network, in Nanaimo, first as an inpatient counsellor for individual treatment, then a family counsellor in the Family Support programs. Jim now has twelve years of professional experience as a substance abuse counsellor. He is skilled as well in individual, couple, and group counselling. He describes his philosophy of counselling therapy as follows:

“In my 28-year career as a clinical counsellor and educator, I have sought to create a “safe place where people can be vulnerable.” I consider the tender vulnerability of the soul a “sacred place,” to be treated with the utmost respect and compassionate care. Furthermore, my goal, therefore, is to establish a strong therapeutic alliance, where both myself and clients work in a collaborative change process. I employ counselling techniques from various schools and models, including Humanistic, Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral, and EMDR Therapy. Additionally, I believe, as did Albert Ellis, that what we think about activating events, produces feelings that drive behaviors. My goal is client empowerment, through greater self-awareness as well as equipping with knowledge and skills so clients can live mature, responsible, and enjoyable lives.”
