Celebrating 30 years of practice!
In two words, Joseph is a "people person."
Joseph is the clinic director, and a practising physiotherapist. He received his degree from the Department of Physiotherapy - Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1995. Speciality courses while at the University of Toronto included Physical Therapy in Sports, and Rheumatology. His clinical placements were broad and diverse including Hand Physiotherapy following Plastic and Microvascular surgery, Therapeutic Riding, and Spinal Cord Injuries. He continues to stay current and provide the best evidence based interventions through courses, conferences, regularly reviewing the literature, and learning from colleagues.
Joseph considers himself fortunate to have always worked along side valued and wonderful people and mentors. He established Physiotherapy on Kent in 1999. He has been a pioneer in community practice by pursuing a person-centered care model through a dedicated, low volume, one-to-one treatment approach - one of the first in Ottawa to do this.
Joseph has been a leader in the profession. He has served on the Board of Directors of both the Ontario and Canadian Physiotherapy Associations. He has been an ardent advocate for his patients and the profession. In 2021, he was instrumental in preventing cuts to extended health benefits that would have affected people 65 and older. He was involved in the Physiotherapy Scope of Practice Review through the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council that culminated with the passing of Bill 179 (2009) - An Amendment to the Regulated Health Professions Act, and has continued to be a strong voice for the importance of physiotherapy in primary care. In 2021, he was deeply honoured to be awarded a Medal of Distinction to mark the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. This award recognized 100 individuals who have had a significant and meaningful impact on the physiotherapy profession. He was humbled to be in the company of many who he has looked up to and who have been a role model to him.
Joseph is passionate about people. His focus has always been on his patients, the people around him, and the world he is a part of. He is a strong voice for the environment and the future. He is an unwavering proponent for equity and justice. He believes in the importance of the clinician-client relationship, the value of physiotherapy in helping people live both better and longer, liveable and healthy communities, and more broadly, for a strong, innovative, efficient, and accessible health care system for all.
Joseph models an active lifestyle and healthy living. He is originally from Thunder Bay. He has lived in Ottawa since 1997, after marrying his best friend. He was a rower at the Thunder Bay Rowing Club, selected to row in the "quad" for Team Ontario at the Canada Summer Games, and was in the varsity "four" while at the University of Toronto. He has rowed at provincial, national, and international regattas. He achieved a Level 2 Coaching certificate from Rowing Canada. He continues to exercise regularly by walking or riding his bike to work, swimming, or going to the gym. He still imagines the water when on a Concept 2 ergometer. He lives what he promotes because he believes in the importance of it as part of the continuum of healthy aging.
Joseph has frequently said, "People are my tonic." He looks forward to meeting you and contributing to making a positive change in your life through his practice.
