Maria Gehue received her Bachelor of Kinesiology degree, with honours, from Memorial University in Newfoundland. Her research focused on Stroke Rehabilitation, which ultimately lead her towards pursuing a career in physiotherapy. She then went on to obtain her Master of Science in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University and has called Halifax her home ever since.
Maria has a wealth of knowledge around human movement patterning, cross referencing her anatomy and biomechanics skillset to truly understand each individual patient’s structure. Her treatment style includes multi-plane functional assessments, manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, dry needling/trigger point therapy, neuro-proprioceptive taping and exercise prescription. She sees patients of all ages and fitness levels, focusing her treatment on accurately diagnosing the injury and creating individualized treatment plans.
In addition to her orthopaedic caseload, Maria is a trained pelvic floor physiotherapist. She is an active member of the Woman’s Health Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and a strong advocate for this area of physiotherapy. She believes no mechanical dysfunction should go undiscussed, no matter how sensitive in nature the issues appear. She has completed advanced training to help women suffering from urinary incontinence, over-active bladder, pelvic organ prolapse, dyspareunia/painful intercourse (genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder), chronic constipation, fecal incontinence/urgency, tailbone pain/trauma, diastasis recti/post-partum core recovery, preparing for and recovery from caesarean birth and vaginal birth, labour and delivery: maternal support through comfort measures and pelvic biomechanics.
Maria is a trained support personal for women during labour and has recently started attending births. She also offers breast feeding support for women and infants, helping common conditions such as mastitis, blocked milk ducts, nipple trauma, engorgement, latch mechanics, tongue tie, and head turning preference.
