Physiotherapist, IMS (Anatomic Neuropathic) Practitioner, Temporomandibular & Facial Neuromuscular Retraining Therapist
Marissa graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2020 with a Master of Physical Therapy. Prior to her graduate studies, she earned a Bachelor in Kinesiology and worked as a kinesiologist, building a strong foundation in movement and rehabilitation. Since graduating, she has worked in private practice physiotherapy and remains dedicated to ongoing postgraduate education, including completing fellowships in Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and Facial Palsy. Additionally, Marissa is certified in Intramuscular Stimulation (AN-IMS), Orthopaedic Division Manual Therapy Level 1, and has completed further training in the treatment of scoliosis and hyperkyphosis.
Her passion for helping people with jaw and facial discomfort stems from her own personal experience growing up with dental and jaw issues, inspiring her to want to help others with jaw/face related pain and to raise awareness about the importance of treatment in this area.
Marissa takes a whole-person approach to care, considering the physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors that may impact recovery. She is passionate about collaborating with clients to create individualized treatment plans that align with their goals. Drawing on education, manual therapy, and evidence-based exercise prescription, she works with clients of all ages and fitness levels to help them return safely and effectively to their usual activities and hobbies — or simply get back to feeling like themselves.
Marissa grew up in the Fraser Valley and Tri-Cities where she developed a lifelong love for staying active and exploring nature. Having danced competitively from a young age, she remains connected to the dance community and enjoys incorporating movement and rhythm into her daily life.
Outside of the clinic, Marissa loves hiking local trails, going for walks, and discovering new ways to move/exercise. For downtime, she’s a big fan of binge-watching reality TV and discovering new local coffee shops and is always open to any new recommendations!

Fascial Manipulation® is a soft tissue manual therapy method to treat chronic and subacute myofascial pain and dysfunctions by targeting the areas of altered gliding ability (densifications) in between fibrous layers of myofascial structures. Fascial Manipulation® involves applying deep friction on these areas of densifications to improve this gliding ability. The method can be painful, but improvement is typically seen within 2-3 sessions.

Facial Palsy results from damage to the facial nerve for a variety of reasons. It can cause the face to stop moving on one or more rarely both sides of the face. Sometimes the facial nerve recovers quite quickly (days to a few weeks) and at other times it might take longer (months). Typical diagnoses include: Bell’s palsy, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, Acoustic neuromas/Vestibular schwannomas, trauma, congenital facial palsy, Lyme disease and others. Facial Neuromuscular Retraining will help you learn how to use your facial muscles again through soft tissue mobilization and specific retraining strategies to regain coordination and balance in your face. This treatment is especially useful if you develop synkinesis or abnormal movement patterns.

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) are a group of complex problems related to the jaw joint (the term TMJ is often used to refer to these types of problems). These conditions may be the result of a number of factors, including trauma (such as a car accident, a blow to the jaw, or a fall on the chin) and overuse (such as persistent clenching of the jaw). Treatment includes extensive education regarding the diagnosis, symptoms and self-care strategies to help with recovery. The initial examination involves taking a thorough history as well as examination of the temporomandibular joints and neck. The majority of individuals with TMD also suffer from neck pain, hence the importance of the neck examination. Treatment involves a strong emphasis on education. Following the initial examination, the client is provided with an anatomy lesson of the involved muscles and joints, the mechanics of jaw movements, and advice on methods to reduce strain to the jaw and neck. Other components of treatment may include self-manual therapy, self-massage techniques, soft tissue stretching and active exercise prescription.

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based therapy program used to treat problems associated with balance, vertigo and dizziness. Specifically, it works with the parts of the brain that process balance information. A vestibular assessment will involve filling out a questionnaire, discussing the history of your condition in detail, and a series of head positioning tests, vision tests and balance tests specific to your condition. Treatment may involve self-manual techniques along with balance, vision and coordination exercises. Please note that the assessment and treatment of vestibular problems may provoke some of your symptoms. For this reason it is recommended that you have someone with you in the room during your treatment.
