Oncology massage is a specialized type of massage that has been adapted to safely treat people
living with cancer in all stages of their experience. Its gentle, light touch is rooted in compassion
and strives to support the client’s physical and mental health. The therapist and client work
together, reviewing medical history to develop personal care goals for the massage.
When reviewing their history, several things are considered, such as where they are in the
treatment cycle, types of medication and treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation
treatments. The condition of their skin, bones, organs and any other areas where we
need to take extra care. We also discuss medical devices like ports in place, and any surgical
sites and scarring that may need attention or extra caution.
Research and review of scientific data indicate that oncology massages can help improve
quality of life by increasing relaxation, improving sleep, and may help to support immune
function. It can help to relieve anxiety, pain, and nausea, improve joint and body range of
motion and provide some relief from peripheral neuropathy and edema. For those who have
had surgical interventions, it can help improve the range of motion by softening scar tissue,
reducing strain and pulling on surrounding tissues. Oncology massage sessions often provide a
space to find some reprieve, where in the middle of everything going on, a client can find a quiet
place of respite.
