Neurofunctional Acupuncture is a modern approach to the traditional Chinese method of acupuncture. In this model, acupuncture needles are inserted at specific points along a nerve path and/or into tight/tender musculature and are then stimulated with the use of gentle electricity at low frequency. This stimulates the nervous system in a way that relieves pain, elevates mood and improves blood flow to help heal peripheral tissues. The initial canine examination involves a thorough health history of the dog and in-depth analysis of any mobility issues, behavioural changes or performance problems that prompted the appointment. Previous diagnostic tests and/or any imaging from their veterinarian is also reviewed. Physical examination involves: postural and gait analysis, range of motion testing, as well as static and dynamic motion palpation of the spine and extremities. Once an appropriate diagnosis and a plan of management has been discussed a treatment plan can begin. Treatment often includes corrective chiropractic adjustments, joint mobilization(s), myofascial release, passive range of motion and stretching, canine-specific kinesiology taping, rehabilitative exercise prescription, and therapeutic laser therapy/photobiomodulation if indicated (additional fee).

Follow-up treatments begin with a gait/postural analysis and a review of any changes to the dog’s health, mobility and behavioural status since the previous visit. Manual therapy often includes chiropractic adjustments, joint mobilization(s), myofascial release, passive range of motion and stretching, canine-specific kinesiology taping, rehabilitative exercise prescription, and therapeutic laser therapy/photobiomodulation if indicated (additional fee).
