Yu Yang (Thomas) Lai is a Registered Acupuncturist with the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC. He completed his acupuncture training at the Tzu Chi International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is currently apprenticing under Dr. Zhao Liang, former Director and Chief Physician of Beijing Furen Ophthalmology Hospital and Senior TCM Practitioner in BC.
His practice is grounded in traditional channel theory, complemented by specialized training in Chuang Scalp Acupuncture, Zhu Scalp Acupuncture, and Lin Style Structural Therapy Needling — gentle, precision-based techniques well suited to musculoskeletal pain. He also incorporates fire cupping, guasha, and moxibustion, and is continuing his study of Master Tung's Acupuncture, known for rapid relief through distal needling.
Through his training under Dr. Zhao, Thomas has also gained experience using scalp acupuncture to address eye conditions such as myopia and age-related visual decline.
Thomas came to medicine after an earlier career in engineering and technology, which gives him a precise, systematic approach to assessment and a particular interest in the pain patterns of desk-bound and repetitive work — headaches, neck and shoulder tension, and postural strain.
Thomas emphasizes gentle technique, clear communication, and steady progress over the course of treatment. With a multicultural background and years spent living across Asia and North America, he connects easily with patients from all walks of life. He speaks Mandarin natively, is fluent in English, and is conversational in Cantonese.

This acupuncture treatment is coupled with cupping, qigong energy, tuina/acupressure or moxibustion. Cupping is one of the therapeutic techniques in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and is similar to a backward deep tissue massage. Qigong energy is similar to reiki or an energetic massage treatment utilizing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles and works on the physical, energetic and spiritual energy fields. Tuina/acupressure is also a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine and works on the same TCM principles (the meridians and acupuncture points) as acupuncture. Moxibustion can be applied to areas of the body where there is cold pain in order to help warm the body either directly, with a base of ginger or garlic to protect the skin or directly on a needle to affect an acupuncture point directly.
